Blue-tongued skink
Tiliqua scincoides
Class: Reptiles (Reptilia)
Order: Squamoses (Squamata)
Suborder: Lizards (Lacertilia)
Family: Skinks (Scincidae)
- It is distributed from the north-west to the south of Australia along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, on the island New Guinea.
- The life span is up to 15 years.
- It received its name because of the violet-blue colour of the tongue.
- In case of danger it bends its flattened body in a semi-circle and opens its mouth, demonstrating its tongue. It uses a snake-like type of moving: it slides on the ground pressing its short limbs to the body. Because if it people often take these lizards for venomous snakes.
