- It occurs in the basins of Amazon and Orinoco rivers;
- Longevity is up to 30 years;
- Its long flattened neck is decorated with many fringed formations; these outgrowths enlarge the surface of the body which allows to the turtles who live in the water constantly to breath with the whole surface of their skin.
- Matamata opens its mouth widely and sharply pulls water into it, in the result the prey is swallowed as a whole, the mouth is closed, and the water is then let out from the mouth.
