Our achievements
Tula exotarium possesses one of the world largest collections of snakes enlisting more than 525 species and sub-species. Many of these snakes are kept only here and one cannot find them anywhere else. Scientists of different Academies of Sciences and Institutes as well as the zoo workers from different countries visit Tula every day to learn the unique animals or methods of their keeping and raising.
Every year we see the birth of more than 4000 young animals from more than 170 species of reptiles. During the period of our work we managed to create self-replicating populations in 54 threatened species of reptiles and amphibia.
It was the first time in the world practice when we received the geniture from 48 species of reptiles and amphibia.
The exotarium got the international acknowledgement in many countries of the world.
3 species of snakes, new for the science, were described with our participation:
• Boiga tanahjampeana, Orlov & Ryabov, 2002
• Boiga bengkuluensis, Orlov, Kudryavtzev, Ryabov, Shumakov, 2003
• Trimeresurus truongsonensis, Orlov, Ryabov, Thanh, Cuc, 2004.
152 articles and 3 books were published:
• N.B. Ananjeva, N.L. Orlov, R.G. Khalikov, I.S. Darevsky, S.A. Ryabov, A.V. Barabanov. «The reptiles of Northern Eurasia», ZIN, Saint-Petersburg, 2004.
• A. Gumprecht, F Tillack, N. L. Orlov, A. Captain, S. Ryabov. «Asian Pitvipers», GeitjeBooks, Berlin, 2004
• Natalia B. Ananjeva, Nikolai L. Orlov, Roman G. Khalikov, Ilya S. Darevsky, Sergei A. Ryabov, Andrei V. Barabanov. «The reptiles of Northern Eurasia», PENSOFT, Bulgaria, 2006.
The exotarium is a founder of the regional collected scientific works “Nature of the Tula region” (together with the reserve museum “Kulikovo Field”).
