Zoo – Behind the scenes

For most visitors our Zoo is just our exhibition – our charming animals, interesting field-trips, holidays, when the Zoo is open for visitors at night, and many other things, but this is just the top of the iceberg. Our visitors are only familiar with the work of one of our departments – the Instructive Department.
The Herpetological Department of our Zoo deals with the scientific research of South-Eastern Asia and other scantily explored regions, preserving species in captivity, describing new species for scientific purposes, writing books and articles and breeding rare and endangered species.
Each year over 4000 young snakes hatch in our Zoo. It is very difficult to grow a snake from a tiny young one. Especially for that purpose we have created a unique department in our Zoo – the special snake kindergarten.

The Entomological Department deals with studying the insects of different regions, including the Tula region, studying important and rare OOGN, publishing two magazines (the yearly “Nature of the Tula Region”, devoted to local history issues, and the entomological “Eversmannia”), and working with the most prominent entomological collections of Russia.
Our International Department coordinates the work with zoos, reptile breeding centers, scientific institutions and herpetologists from all over the world, organizes research expeditions, translates the articles of Tula herpetologists into English, German and other languages.

Breeding and raising of laboratory rodents and insects to feed the animals with, growing hydroponic wheat, developing and applying new methods and technologies of forage animal breeding, collecting and analyzing nutritive base information for the zootechnic and methodological work is the task of our Forage Department.
The Technical Department and Transport and Supply Department provide necessary forage and materials, perform passenger transportation, make and repair the universal equipment, necessary for our animals.
